No matter how you intend to file your company accounts and tax return, there are four things that you’ll definitely need before your filing deadline arrives:
1. Companies House Authentication Code
A six digit code which acts like a digital version of your signature. If you can’t find it then you can request one by logging in to Companies House and then clicking Request an authentication code.
Your authentication code will be sent by post to the company’s registered address. It can take up to 5 working days to arrive so please do not leave it until the last minute or you may find yourself with a late filing penalty.
2. Government Gateway User ID and Password
Your ID is usually made up of six or twelve characters and it is your digital identification for interacting with the Government’s online services.
If you’ve lost your user ID or password then click here for guidance.
3. To be registered for and have activated HMRC’s Corporation Tax Online Service
This is the one that we see catching business owners out most often. Unless your company has activated this service then it will not be able to file its tax return electronically.
You can register for the service here or contact the HMRC Online Services Helpdesk for further assistance.
Once you register, an Activation Code will be sent by post to the company’s registered address. It can take up to 10 working days to arrive so please don’t leave it too late!
4. Accurate Accounts
Check, check and check again!
Don’t forget to make sure your balance sheet isn’t listing any ‘rogue’ accounts (e.g. ‘Suspense’) and that it has been aggregated correctly for statutory reporting.
Instafile can help you to prepare accurate accounts so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or are looking for additional peace of mind.
